About The Gallery
Founded by Brett Shaheen in 1999, SHAHEEN Modern and Contemporary Art occupies a 4000 square foot exhibition space in downtown Cleveland. Over the past six years, the gallery has built an eclectic, projects style exhibition program that focuses on new and recent work by younger contemporary artists. During that time, SHAHEEN has mounted exhibitions of new/recent works by Rachel Howard, Dana Schutz, Roe Ethridge, Tara Donovan, Dennis Hollingsworth and Jesse Bransford, among others. Constantly expanding and evolving, the exhibition program is predicated on the development of direct dialogue and working relationships with nationally and internationally accomplished young artists, as well as promising emerging talents. SHAHEEN has established itself as a visible, yet "out-of-the-way" venue that offers the more widely recognized artists with whom it works/has worked an opportunity to exhibit work and expand their audiences outside of the artworld's focal-point cities. At the same time, the gallery has provided lesser known, emerging artists from Cleveland and the surrounding region with a platform for gaining broader exposure and generating further exhibition opportunities.
In addition to its exhibition program, SHAHEEN specializes in the resale of paintings, drawings and sculpture by important modern, post-war and contemporary European and American artists (e.g. Alexander Calder, Joan Miro, Morris Louis, Claes Oldenburg….), as well as works by the most significant artists to emerge during the 1980's and 1990's ( e.g. Raymond Pettibon, Lari Pittman, Yoshitomo Nara, John Currin, Elizabeth Peyton…..). The gallery also maintains an extensive and outstanding inventory of prints and multiples by important modern and contemporary artists such as Roy Lichtenstein, Frank Stella, Chuck Close, Luc Tuymans and Jennifer Bartlett.
Prior to opening SHAHEEN Modern and Contemporary Art in 1999, Brett, along with Mitchell Shaheen, dealt art exclusively on a private basis as the Brett Mitchell Collection, Inc. Founded by Mitchell in 1972 and joined by Brett in 1994, the Brett Mitchell Collection Inc. specialized in the resale of major paintings, drawings and sculpture by important 20th century artists.
